Everyone loves the sound of a garage. Dreams of a tidy storage space, with your gleaming car and a home gym come to mind but they rarely materialise. The standard garage in the UK frequently becomes a glorified storage unit with questionable organisation and very little space for that gleaming car. To answer our most frequently asked questions about garage conversions, we had a conversation with our Head Installer, Steve Gibson.
What is the minimum space I need for a garage sim?
SG – Rather than specifying a minimum size, I always encourage one course of action. Ask us. Our biggest strength is in the variety of installations we have performed. To maximise the space you have available to you we can go as far as raising the ceiling or digging the floor deeper to allow for a full swing.
What would a full conversion entail?
SG – If you were looking for a full redesign to perfectly house a simulator we would start by looking at raising the ceiling. In order to do this we liaise with a structural engineer to remove, redesign and strengthen the supports within the ceiling. This allows us to create ample height, making the room feel bigger and function better. We then obtain all the necessary building regulations to make changes, whether your garage is internal or detached. Once these changes have been made, we finish the room with a fully decorated look to suit your specifications, including plastering, painting and lighting to perfectly suit a golf simulator.
Can I still park my car in the garage?
SG – Yes. With a retractable screen such as the Home Course, or a custom built screen on a track, you can effectively stow the simulator away between uses. People often worry about driving onto the putting turf which we lay but there is no need to worry. We install a super durable, indoor/outdoor putting green turf which can easily stand up to the weight of a car.
Which Launch Monitors can I use?
SG – You can use any launch monitor in your garage conversion but your options depend on space. If you are struggling to allow for 5.5m internal length then you are better off looking at photometric launch monitors such as the SkyTrak and Foresight GC3. If length is not an issue however, you can look at installing radar based systems such as FlightScope Mevo+ and even TrackMan.
